Yes, it is I! I bet you're wondering where I've been for the past 31 weeks. Well, if I told you, I'd have to kill you - it's that classified. Honestly, I've been around more of less. I've been making a ton of youtube videos -
http://www.youtube.com/user/Dreadpirate46
It's mostly wrestling themed, but other stuff scattered throughout. Watch them if you dare.

I've also been playing 1 vs. 100 Live at a friends house every Friday night. We stream it on justin.tv so check us out - http://www.justin.tv/3vs100live
We start at 7pm pst and usually run until 9pm. It's fun and we make jokes more to keep ourselves entertained than the viewers.

Finally, I'm still looking for employment. It'll happen, I know it. A want to get some type of shipping/receiving position in a warehouse. Something where I divide my time between sitting and doing actual work. I don't want to be on my feet or my ass the whole time. A happy medium. It's the Libra in me.

I can't explain why I haven't bothered to update this. For the longest time, I hardly came around and even now, this is the first time I've checked my friend's list in about a week. I guess I always seem to find other ways to occupy my time. But no more! I'm returning like a bat out of hell and I'm going to make more of an effort to post things that are going on here, such as they are.

So, bring me up to speed, what have I missed?

"Captain, this film is clearly illogical."

Star Trek (2009)
Directed by JJ Abrams
Written by Robert Orci & Alex Kurtzman

Most would agree the definition of a re-envisioning or remake is taking something and improving upon it. One has to first question, though, whether the original product needs improving upon. In some movies, the answer is yes; but in most, the answer is no. This is especially true of entities that have such a saturated history as Star Trek. Making small changes is entirely understandable, but changing the entire continuity of an established world leaves me scratching my head. It feels like a slap in the face of everything that’s come before it, as to say “Your reality wasn’t good enough, I’m going to change it!”

When Gene Roddenberry decided to create a new world of Star Trek, he didn’t re-envision Kirk, Spock and McCoy, only with a modern feel. He create new characters and new situations. Things felt fresh and interesting and the seven seasons of The Next Generation proves this.

This is where I think the new Star Trek movie fails the most.

Instead of reinventing the wheel, the makers should have started from scratch. Set the world of this Star Trek 100 years into the Next Generation’s future. Then you can do as you please and you’re not stepping on other people’s toes.

Before I proceed, let me give you some background information on me. I’d probably say I’m a casual fan of Star Trek. I don’t know everything about the Trek universe and I couldn’t site you obscure information about all of the episodes. My father was a fan of the original series and we would sit down to re-runs now and then. When the Next Generation was released, he and I decided to give it a chance and we’ve yet to regret it. Even now, I watch them whenever Sci-fi airs them.

Over the course of the franchise, I’ve grown ever more distant with each series. One of the exciting things about Next Generation was that an almost 30 year gap separated both series. It was an event and it was pretty exciting. By the release of Enterprise, the franchise had felt saturated, convoluted and watered-down. Star Trek needed a rest to let the fans get restless again and eager for a new product.

Then this movie was announced. When I heard about it being a re-envisioning, my immediate reaction was “What?” and “Why?” Did we really need to see younger versions of the original cast? Couldn’t the makers of the next Star Trek just come up with their own unique creations?

After seeing the movie, I’m still asking these questions.

I went into Star Trek with low expectations, but a somewhat open mind. And while I was watching, a bizarre thing happened - I had fun. I enjoyed the movie. I laughed when McCoy would make a reference to being a doctor, not a “insert word” and I would tense up when Kirk and Sulu were fighting the Romulans on the deck of the huge drill.

I walked out of the film with a smile on my face. My friends and I went to get something to eat and we discussed what we’d seen. That’s when reality started to reassert itself. I started to think about the film I’d just viewed and I began to realize that there were some huge flaws in it.

The entire plot revolves around time travel - something Trek has overdone. This is the biggest thing that turned me off. The film wasn’t a simple story about the Enterprise and its crew, it was a huge complicated mess about traveling to the past and changing reality. It was adequately told, but felt very unoriginal. It felt like a leftover script from Enterprise that someone dusted off and modified.

Another problem I had was the way Kirk took command of the Enterprise. Old Spock tells Kirk to gain command by making Young Spock realize that he’s emotionally invested in the situation, thereby, Spock is in no position to command the Enterprise. There’s just one flaw with this thinking. Kirk’s father was killed by the same Romulan commanding the ship the Enterprise is going after. Wouldn’t it be logical to argue that Kirk is also emotionally invested in the situation and unfit for command? Kirk is a bundle of emotions and it’s obvious he hasn’t gotten over the death of his father. It’s what’s caused him to act out throughout the entire first half. And this is not knit-picking - this is a major cause and effect of the second half of the movie and integral to Kirk taking command of the ship.

I think most of the cast were expertly picked and were perfectly utilized with two exceptions - Uhura’s character. In the turbo-lift, she and Spock are talking after Vulcan has been destroyed and she offers him emotional support. And that’s all I felt her character contributed to this film - she was either spurning Kirk’s advances or looking with teary eyes at Spock. Where is the wise, strong willed woman who should have offered Spock some advice when he needed it the most?

The other mis-utilization was Kirk - Am I supposed to feel empathy for Kirk? He acts out and gets into trouble because his dad wasn’t there to hug him - this is the hero of the film? I could have let him pass if he had matured in the course of the film, but in his heart, he hasn’t. He cheated the Kobayashi Maru test (yes, I realize the real Kirk did as well) but he also cheated his way into commanding the Enterprise. What are the consequences of this? Starfleet decides to make him Pike’s replacement - has he even finished Starfleet Academy? It’s certainly a window into reality, as most people in power do little to earn that position but this is the guy we’re supposed to cheer. Some hero!

My favorite character was McCoy. It seemed like he had some of the best lines and both he and Scotty brought some comic relief to the film that was definitely welcomed. Spock was perfectly portrayed as a man with an ever-existing internal battle between Human and Vulcan sensibilities. I was happy with Sulu and Chekov, as well. And Eric Bana played a great Romulan villian.

I’d also like to say I enjoy some of the small moments. Kirk asking Sulu what kind of combat training he’s had and Sulu responds with “Fencing.” stands out as one of my favorites.

At the end of the day, I have to say that while Star Trek is entertaining when being watched, it has very little lasting value once out of the theaters. It’s a summer money making movie, nothing more, nothing less. It’s all flash, with little substance. I honestly doubt it’s a revitalization of the franchise. This film will do well in the theaters due to curiosity factor, but the hardcore fans will come away disappointed and the average movie go-er will have forgotten it by the time summer truly arrives. I also don't see any sequel they might plan doing as well as this film. All in all, I’ve seen worse, but my man, I have definitely seen better.

I'm giving this film a 5 out of 10.

A friend brought this subject up and got me thinking, so I thought I'd inquire -

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of Twitter?

"Twitter is a free service that lets you keep in touch with people through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?" taken straight from their site.

It sounds like LJ and IM had a baby and named it Twitter. What kind of name is that for a baby?

I truly don't see the point of this site. It would be different if the site offered something new, innovative and unique, but it doesn't. It's not even whole conversation. It's little pieces of conversation and sometimes not even complete sentences. If I want to hear your disjointed fragmented thoughts, I'll come over and get you drunk.

Can you argue that it does bring something new to the table? I'd like to know.

Is it meant to be something you write while on the go? Well, if you're out and about and want to talk to someone, they have these amazing devices called telephones. No, really! They allow you to contact your friends and actually hear their voice. Amazing, isn't it? The wonders of technology.

Not to mention that while you're out in the world, shouldn't you be enjoying what you're doing instead of getting on your phone or blackberry and bragging about what you're doing while you're doing it? You might miss something. How about you do it and then come back and tell us about it? Hey, instead of tweeting (can anyone argue that doesn't sound like a cutesy name for a fart?) why don't take some pictures with that camera phone. Isn't that the reason you dropped an extra $100 getting the latest model?

It's one thing to be out of touch with technology and I don't feel I'm really that. Simply put, I don't jump on the latest thing to come along just because everyone else is. I especially don't get behind any technology that doesn't improve on what came before it or brings something new to the table.

Okay, enough complaining.

Commercials that make no sense, part 1

Try as I might, some commercials just can't be ignored. Some commercials just confuse the hell out of me and I tend to wonder whether the makers have any common sense. Now and then, when I come across one, I'll share it with you.

Part one - "They're rollover and die minutes!"

AT&T has a few commercials where a family find ways to get rid of their rollover minutes, but the mother insists they keep them. One in particular really gets under my skin. The family is having a yard sale and the son tries to sell his rollover minutes, but here comes Mom to stop and berate him. "In this economy, we have to save everything we can and that includes your rollover minutes!"

First off, yes, the economy is bad right now and you should be smart with your money. But here's where Mom's logic goes awry - if the son sells his rollover minutes, he's making money on something he won't use. Isn't that good for the family? Shouldn't you applaud him for having the smarts to make the family some money? I think you're secretly jealous that he's doing well with his sales while the 2nd hand commenorative plates that you bought 10 years ago for no reason haven't even been looked at, so you instead freak out, yell at him and make him feel like he's doing something wrong.

You're a horrible parent and should be ashamed of yourself. I'm calling child services.

My advice - shut the hell up and let him sell the rollover minutes. He's making you back the money you spent on this shitty phone plan, idiot!

Recently, someone sent me one of those "Made in 'foreign country'" emails, talking about how John wonders why there are no jobs in American while he uses products made in other countries, obviously trying to get me to adopt the "Buy American" mindframe.

So here's my take on the whole "Buy American" situation.....

Why do people live in the desert, where there's no food, little drinkable water and no means of sustaining themselves? And yet, people still do and sometimes even refuse to leave.

In the same case, if John's so worried that there are no jobs where he is, why doesn't he go to where the jobs are?

Americans have no one to blame but themselves. American corporations buy their products and use workers from overseas because it's cheaper and there are far fewer rules governing worker rights in other countries than here. These corporate businessmen are making seven figures by selling America out.

But who do we blame? The foreign workers who are barely making ends meet, being paid pennies a day by these American companies. They sure as hell aren't living in bliss, with a house in the Hamptons and a penthouse in the city overlooking the park.

And on the same coin, I'm all about buying American IF the product I'm buying is reasonably priced and reliable. Mom and Pop shops are great and I'd love to support them whenever possible, but if just down the street a place is selling the same thing vastly cheaper and better made, where do you think I'm going to buy it? And if the Mom and Pops have to drive up their selling prices just to stay in business, something tells me they won't stay in business much longer.

Say there's two lemonade stands - I run one outside my house, you run the other from yours. I hand squeeze all of mine myself and sell mine at $.50. You employ 5 kids from the neighborhood to squeeze yours, paying them $.01 for every glass you sell and sell yours at $.25. People flock to your stand because it's obviously cheaper and you're able to keep up with the flow of people because of your employment. You're making $.20 a glass and don't have to do any of the real work, just the selling. Not very fair, but what can I do? I could employ some kids too, but none of them like me because I'm the same guy who's always yelling at them from my patio when they pass. Guess who's going to be in the money? Guess who's going to be falsely directing the blame at the kids in the neighborhood yet again?

Thoughts?

Well, I'm out of work and doing a half-assed job of looking for a new job. GPJ has had job cuts due to our clients cancelling some of the high profile shows. I was one of the cuts. I got a decent compensation package, so I'm not at my wit's end just yet.

Friday afternoon, some friends and I went to see My Bloody Valentine in 3D. We chose the Tanforam theater since it was the only one playing it nearby. No IMAX MBV? Oh well. I thought it was an okay horror film. It took advantage of the 3D experience, but the technology is still seriously lacking. We chose great seats (cause we got there early) but it was still so-so. Plenty of blood and gore, but the actors tried acting too hard and the writers did the foolish task of presenting a few too many talky scenes. And you can keep your Dawson Creek drama out of my slasher flick, okay? Overall, it's a mediocre slasher flick that tries to be more than it should be. Worth seeing in theaters? No.

....oh I kept my 3D glasses. Dumbasses actually think I'm going to recycle them? Thankfully, I don't think we paid extra for them.

*sings* I wear my 3D glasses at night....

So......you hiring?

Someone explain this to me - preferably a woman.

I just saw a news article about a company that keeps track of your ovulation cycle and will call you to let you know when it's the best time to concieve. It's supposedly for women who are too busy to keep track on their own accord. Here's my question - if you as a woman are too busy to keep track of when you're ovulating, what makes you think you're going to miraculously have time for a baby?

Seriously! They profiled a woman who has three children already and wants a 4th. Why!?! It's nice to want to have children, but don't stand there and say "Oh, I'm so busy with 3 kids, I'm always on the go, so I don't have time to keep track of when I'm fertile."

Listen, you don't have time already, you don't need a 4th kid, lady! You know what? You're just lazy.

I'm a guy and if I had to keep track of when my semen was at its most potent, I'd take the time to do it, regardless of how busy I was.

You make time for your child and that starts at conception.

And instead of looking back, I'm going to look forward and let you know what films I'm eagerly awaiting in 2009.

January release

My Bloody Valentine 3D - I have low expectations for this movie, since it's probably going to be your average slasher film. I'm more interested in seeing how well the 3D transfers to film. It's something I haven't seen in a while, the last 3D movie being Beowulf, so I'm definitely going up to the city to see this in IMAX.

Paul Blart : Mall Cop - I'm a big fan of Kevin James. While I might let this pass me by in theaters, it's definitely on my rental list.

February release

Fanboys - This sounds like an amusing and humorous story. Being a fan of Trekkies, I'm a firm believer in being able to laugh at yourself and this movie will do that for me.

Friday the 13th remake - While I really don't see what the point of remaking the original film instead of just continuing the franchise, I'll make a point of seeing it if I'm able.

March release

Watchmen - Who watches the Watchmen? Being a huge fan of the comic, I want to have high expectations for this movie, but I'm staying reserved because I know how comic films are hit or miss. At this point, I'm anticipating a great movie.

May release

Wolverine: Origins - Of course, I'm looking forward to this. Did you ever have any doubt?

Star Trek - Or Star Trek Jr. as I like to call it. I have severe misgivings about this movie, but I'm going to bite my tongue and go see it. I'm setting my expectations very low for this, so I won't be disappointed when I walk out of the theater.

That's about it for now. I'm sure there will be other films coming out in 2009 that will pique my interest, but these are the ones I've heard about so far.

Thoughts?

Oracle Open-Hell

If you don't live in the city or if you live under a rock, you might not have noticed Oracle take over Howard street between 3rd and 4th for the past week. It was all for the annual OpenWorld where 40,000+ people come from all over the world to view new technology and applications.

I had the opportunity to work the conference through the event management company I work for. That's right, I was there from Wednesday Sept. 17th until Thursday Sept. 25. From the beginning of setup to the repacking of our materials, I was there.

Normally, I don't attend conferences from beginning to end, but I was glad to spend some time up in the city, even if it was in a building all day and I sure wouldn't complain when the paycheck came in.

Now that it's over, I can say there were both good and bad times, but I took everything in stride. I was working materials pickup for most of the week, scanning badges and giving the attendees what they paid for. It's mostly a thankless job, you have people coming to you wanting everything on the shelf, but not being entitled to it.

The bad - People who came to the counter expecting they'd get something because they're Alumni. Well, unfortunately, this year, Oracle decided to put a cap on Alumni give-aways. The first 3000 Alumni to register (back in Apr - Jun) would get a jacket and pin. But did they announce this on their site? Go ahead and guess..............of course not!

Big mistake! People thought because they were Alumni, they'd get something. When we explained things, most of them were accepting of it. But some of them really got under my skin. Most of them were men, no surprise there. They just stood there like deer in headlights, as though I'd come to my senses and give them a jacket. WRONG! Some people just can't take no for an answer. "Dude, I'm sorry you're not getting the jacket. Honestly, it's just a jacket. Get over it. I know it's not fair. Guess what? LIFE ISN'T FAIR, asshole!"

The bad - Oracle was going "Green" this year, or in other words "cheap." Therefore, the lunches were pretty lackluster. A sandwich and a side, which you'd think as potato salad or something. Nope. 3-bean salad or couscous or some pasta salad that tasted so bland, I ended up just eating the sandwich and "recycling" the rest into the garbage. Honestly, though, after Cisco GSM and their splurging for food, I've been spoiled with high expectations. By the final day, I was considering just going out for lunch without expensing it.

The good - yes, surprisingly there was good. Most of the people were in good spirits and some genuinely surprised they got anything. They were social and polite and joking with them helped me push the mean people to the back of my mind. They made the day go by quicker and for that, I'm thankful.

The so-so - I was staying at the Hilton on Kearny St. so I had quite a hike to get to Moscone, but it was exercise my fat ass needs and I had a nicer room than people who were staying closer. Shame there was no woman to woo with it. haha.

During one of my lunches, I went down to the show floor and got some schwag of my own. I got plenty of pens and got my business card laminated. Oracle was giving out little blankets, but I wasn't able to get one. I didn't attend the concert over at Treasure Island. I would have liked to seen Psychedelic Furs and Elvis Costello, but PF went on stage at 8pm (Reg. stayed open until 8pm) so I'd miss them and with 10K possibly going, that was a crowd I'd rather deal without. I went back to my hotel room, grabbed some Thai for dinner and chilled.

Overall, I had a good time onsite. There were times when I felt like pulling out my hair; there were times when I saw the selfishness of people; there were times when I shared a good laugh or conversation with someone from another state, or even country; I even got to flirt with a couple women (of course, they wanted jackets, not my digits.) I don't regret going and I look forward to going again next year.

In two weeks, I'll be flying to Florida for another show. Of course, on our day off, some co-workers and I are going to Disney World. I can't wait!
